History of the Van Wert County Retired Teachers Association
As Written for the 50th Anniversary of the Ohio Retired Teachers' Association
Written by Rae Smith and Virginia Smith in 1995
The Association was organized on November 12, 1968. Nineteen retired teachers met at the Yours and Mine Restaurant for lunch. Mr. O. J. Frederick, President of the Hancock County Chapter aided in the organization of our chapter.
Officers and chairman of committees were chosen and Robert B. Jones was elected president.
The group decided to meet twice annually with one meeting in the spring and one in the fall. Dues were set at one dollar per year.
The purposes of the organization were to inform members of new legislation and to meet socially.
On May 17, 1970, the Chapter adopted a new constitution and by-laws.
Twenty-seven years later the chapter has 65 members, holds four meetings per year and yearly dues are five dollars. Our programs are varied and interesting. Speakers for programs include State Presidents, ORTA Executive Directors, Legislative Agents, Senators, Health Groups, Educators, Local Civic Groups, High School Music Departments and foreign students.
The Van Wert Chapter was one of the first to contribute to the 50th anniversary celebration.
Each year the chapter holds a memorial service for the deceased members.
